Kindermusik with Liz: Liz Fowler
Biography
Music has always played an important part in my life – from the age of 3, I was ‘tinkling the old ivories’ and took formal piano and recorder lessons aged 6 and violin and guitar lessons later on, gaining performing experience in local music festivals. I achieved Grade 8 piano with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (with teaching element) and Grade 8 ABRSM Theory of Music. I also acquired ABRSM Grade 6 in Violin and enjoyed playing this instrument in the school orchestra , where I became leader. I love to sing and play guitar for fun, often improvising and making up little pieces of music along the way. More recently, I joined the local Drama Group and am gaining new experience in acting which is great fun – I will be in my first play shortly and hope to use my musical skills in future productions too.
I have worked in various sectors of industry as a PA and Secretary, to include Media, Music, Publishing, Litigation, Banking, Advertising/sales. One position involved working for the UK affiliate of Opryland Music Group ,USA which helped me to gain valuable experience in the music industry dealing with copyright/royalty administration, music publishing, PR with recording artistes, TV, Radio, Theatre etc. This also enabled me to liaise with music companies around the world and I eventually had the opportunity to meet the staff at the Head Office in Nashville where I was taken on a fantastic tour of Nashville around all the major Record Companies and the famous RCA studio where Elvis had recorded. I also got to visit the Grand Ole Opry and the local TV network and was fortunate enough to meet the late Chet Atkins during the trip which was amazing. This special trip inspired me to take a career break and travel further.
My travels included working on Moshavs in the deserts of Israel, nannying in Tel Aviv, Inter-railing in Europe, visiting other parts of the States and a little of Canada. Part of my nannying experience in Israel enabled me to do a little piano teaching which I loved and I think it was this experience which encouraged me to eventually take up piano teaching in the UK.
After my travels, I worked for another music publisher in London where I met my Husband. We now have two children and have lived in various parts of the UK due to my Husband’s job as a Sports Coach, including the Lake District for 6 years where I worked at a Music Centre, part-time, running music classes for 5-8 year olds. Part of this job involved preparing the children for annual shows which I wrote and produced and directed – a very valuable and enjoyable experience and a chance to explore my creativity.
In 2006 we moved back down to Surrey and I now teach piano, recorder and theory privately. Recently I came across an advert re teaching Kindermusik and immediately rang the number. I was so impressed with the information I was given, and knew that my background in music and administration/business would be perfect for starting up my own Kindermusik business. I began training and became licenced to teach Kindermusik in January 2008. I began teaching with a couple of short holiday courses in Guildford in June 2008 and started my first ‘Village’ class for babies in September 2008 followed by an ‘Our Time’ and ‘Imagine That’ class in January 2009 which are all building up very quickly. I hope to include ‘Young Child’ in my timetable very soon for the 5-7 year olds too.
The courses are fantastic and of a very high standard – I can see how the 30 years of child development research Kindermusik have carried out has paid off – the activities, songs, dances are all developmentally appropriate and it’s a joy to see the children progressing and developing over the weeks and bonding so well with their parent/carer through music and movement .
I look forward to sharing Kindermusik with many more families! A Good Beginning Never Ends!
