Kindermusik with Jan - Jan Holt
Biography
I was born in London, England. My family moved to Hong
Kong when I was 3 and
returned when I was 6 to Lindfield, West Sussex
where I was raised. My mother took me to see ‘The Sound of Music’ five
times. The picture of Julie Andrews sitting on a hilltop with a guitar
singing to a group of children has never left me.
I decided to pursue a career as a School Teacher and took my degree at
the University of Exeter where I also received a scholarship to study
voice. My spare time was taken up in the local ‘Gilbert and Sullivan
Society’. When I graduated, I took up a teaching post in Surbiton. I had
my own class, but taught music throughout the school. This work included
running recorder groups, choirs and entering local music festivals.
In 1987, I moved to Cambridge, Ontario, Canada to become a part of The
Academy of Performing Arts. As part of the Music Company, I had time to
write and perform musicals. I was also able to run workshops for the
children of families that visited the Academy.
I discovered Kindermusik in Cambridge, Ontario. I realised that this
programme could encompass my love for music, children and the best of
what I had enjoyed about teaching. I trained there and shortly after
returned to the UK in 1998 with my husband and 4 children to be near
family again.
Classes
I have been running Kindermusik® with Jan
since January
1999 with now over 200 children every week from our Centre in Burgess
Hill, West Sussex. I run all the programmes including Summer Camps and
Music Box in the Schools with the help of my husband who is my
administrator/trained educator plus two other trained educators. We are
planning to set up a second studio in Brighton, East Sussex, in 2005.
